The Perception & Mind Lab at Johns Hopkins University is looking for online participants for a brief psychology experiment about visual perception. The only requirements are that you are at least 18 years old and are a native English speaker. The task will take approximately 6 1/2 minutes and will pay $0.86.
Are you ready to begin? If so, click "Begin Experiment", and you will be taken to the instructions.
By completing this survey or questionnaire, you are consenting to be in this research study. Your participation is voluntary and you can stop at any time.
(Note: When the experiment is done, you will be told it is done, and then you can click the 'submit' button. If that fails to work, the HIT should "auto-submit" after 1 minute)
This is a voluntary demographic page. Completion of this page is completely up to you. Our funding agency and/or university ask that we obtain the following demographic information from each participant, so that they can monitor gender and minority inclusion in research studies.
Before starting this study, your browser will be placed in full-screen mode. It is ideal that you perform the experiment in this mode. However, if you would like to exit full-screen mode, press the "Escape" key. If this does not work, then on a Mac, you should press Control, Command, and F; or on Windows, press F11 at the top of your keyboard.
Pressing "Next" below will place your browser in "full screen" mode.
In this study, you will see sequences of photographs of various objects.
Before each block (sequence), you will be presented with a "target" image for that block, such as the below image:
Once the sequence starts, your job is to press the 'f' key if the image you see is the target image, and the 'j' key if not.
Note that the target image may appear as it does on the left, or mirror-flipped, as on the right. You should respond to the target in both cases!
Take your time and memorize the target image well! You will only get to see the target image at the beginning of the block. Once the sequence of images begins, you will have to rely on your memory to identify the target image!
This will be extra tricky because the target image for one sequence will be a non-target image in a different sequence later in the experiment.
After you have memorized the target image well, you'll click a button to begin the sequence.
Perform this task both as fast and as accurately as you can! To do so, keep one index finger on the 'f' key, and your other index finger on the 'j' key.
If you respond correctly, the image border will turn green. If you do not, the image border will turn red.
You must act quickly! You will only have 1 second to press the button if you see the target. Otherwise, the trial will be marked as an error.
When you are ready, you may continue on to the first block of the experiment, where you will see the first target image.
You can also feel free to leave any comments below about how the experiment went!
Also, in this experiment, there were several categories of interest (groups of images that were related in a certain way). If you had to guess, what might have been the categories? We're interested to know if you can guess right!
Here is the target image:
(Remember that the image may appear as it does on the left, or mirror-flipped as on the right. You should respond to the target in both cases!)
Take your time and memorize the target image well! You will only get to see this image here, at the beginning of the block. Once the sequence of images begins, you will have to rely on your memory to identify the target image!
You should press the 'f' key if the image you see is the target image above, and to press the 'j' key if not.
Remember: You must respond quickly! If you don't respond to an image within 1 second, the trial will time out and be considered an error!
When ready, press Enter/Spacebar or click 'Begin Block' to begin the sequence. Get ready!
